AI answers are becoming the default in Google search: what the July 2026 data shows

For years the debate was whether AI answers would reshape search. New data from late July 2026 suggests the debate is over. AI Overviews now appear in close to half of US Google searches, and the number has nearly tripled in a year. The result you rank for is no longer the result most people see.

There is a moment when a trend stops being a forecast and becomes the baseline. For AI search, late July 2026 looks like that moment. Data reported from Similarweb put AI Overviews in roughly 43% of US Google searches as of May 2026, up from around 15% a year earlier. Nearly half of searches now open with an AI-generated answer.

What the data actually says

The headline number is the 43%, but the supporting figures tell the fuller story. Similarweb estimated that visits to Google's AI Mode, its conversational search experience, rose from about 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million in May 2026 - more than doubling in under a year. And the number of citations inside AI answers grew more than fivefold over the same period.

One honest caveat, because it matters: these are panel-based estimates, and at least one outlet reporting the data noted the methodology is thin. Treat the exact percentages as directional rather than precise. The direction, though, is not in doubt, and it is steep.

The citation gap is the opportunity

Here is the detail most coverage skips, and it is the most useful one for brands. Even as AI answers spread, only a small share of them carry citations. The same body of data suggested that as of May 2026, only around 6.8% of US ChatGPT desktop queries produced a cited answer.

Read those two facts together. Answers are everywhere, but citations are still scarce. That means the brands that do get named in an answer capture attention out of all proportion to their size, because they are sharing the spotlight with very few others. Scarcity of citations is not a problem to wait out; it is a window to move through.

Why ranking is no longer the finish line

The old mental model was simple: rank on page one, get the click. That model assumed the ranked list was what people looked at. When an AI Overview sits on top of that list and answers the question directly, the ranking underneath it becomes scenery. You can hold position three and still be invisible, because the searcher got their answer before they ever reached you.

This is the shift from being found to being named. Being found meant appearing in a list a person scanned. Being named means the AI includes you in the answer it hands over. They are different achievements, and increasingly only the second one gets you seen.

What to do about it

The takeaway

The July 2026 data marks a line crossed: AI answers are now the default surface of Google search, not an experiment bolted onto it. Nearly half of searches open with an answer, and the click that used to be the whole point is becoming optional. The brands that thrive will be the ones that stop measuring success by where they rank and start measuring it by whether they are named - and they will move now, while being named is still rare enough to be worth a lot.

Frequently asked questions

How many Google searches now show an AI Overview?

According to Similarweb data reported in late July 2026, AI Overviews appeared in about 43% of US Google searches as of May 2026, up from roughly 15% a year earlier. In other words, close to half of searches now return an AI-generated answer at the top. These are panel-based estimates, so treat them as directional rather than exact, but the trend is unmistakable.

Is AI search replacing traditional Google search?

It is changing what a search result looks like more than replacing search itself. The same Similarweb data showed visits to Google's AI Mode rising from about 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million in May 2026, and AI-answer citations growing more than fivefold over the year. Google is increasingly answering in place, so the search still happens, but fewer of them end in a click to a website.

What does the shift to AI answers mean for brands?

It raises the value of being named inside the answer rather than just ranking below it. If close to half of searches surface an AI Overview, ranking on page one is no longer the same as being seen. And because only a small share of AI answers currently carry citations, the brands that do get named capture outsized attention. The job shifts from ranking for clicks to being cited in answers.
