AI search visibility in the United Kingdom: a 2026 AEO guide

AI visibility in the United Kingdom means whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode name your brand when a buyer in the UK asks about your category. The UK has had Google's AI answers longer than almost any market outside the US, and Ofcom's own data shows British searchers now meet them constantly. The answer is in English, but it is a British answer, built from British sources. Here is how to be in it.

This guide covers the whole UK market: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, consumer and business buyers alike. If your buyers are concentrated in the capital, our guide for London and UK brands goes deeper on that angle. Here the question is broader: when anyone in the UK asks an AI engine what to buy, which brands get named, and why.

Why the UK is a distinctive AEO market

Google brought AI Overviews to the UK in August 2024 and AI Mode in July 2025. The answers are English, but they are built for a British buyer.

The first thing that sets the UK apart is how long its buyers have lived with AI answers. Google expanded AI Overviews to the UK in August 2024, one of the first six countries after the US (GSMArena, 16 Aug 2024), and launched AI Mode in the UK on 28 July 2025 (Google, 28 Jul 2025). In most of Europe these features are recent. In the UK they are a settled part of how people search.

The second is scale of exposure. Ofcom's Online Nation report, published on 10 December 2025, found that about 30 percent of searches now show an AI Overview, and that 53 percent of adults say they often see these summaries. It also counted 1.8 billion UK visits to ChatGPT in the first eight months of 2025, up from 368 million in the same period of 2024 (Ofcom, 10 Dec 2025). Whatever your category, a real share of British buyer research now ends in a written answer rather than a click.

The third is subtler, and it is where most brands go wrong: the UK answer is English, but it is not the American answer. The engines know the question came from the UK, and they assemble the response from sources that fit a British buyer.

"The UK answer is written in English, but it is not the American answer. It is built from British sources for a British buyer."

The language situation: one language, a different market

There is no translation gap to close in the UK, which is exactly why brands underestimate it. A US or global brand sees that its English site is strong and assumes the UK is covered. But British buyers phrase questions differently, expect prices in pounds and VAT handled correctly, ask about UK delivery and returns, and care about UK-specific rules: GDPR as the UK applies it, FCA authorization in finance, Companies House filings for a business supplier. An answer built for that buyer leans on sources that speak to it.

Spelling and vocabulary matter more than they look. A British buyer asks about "current accounts", "estate agents", "car insurance excess" or "VAT returns", not their American equivalents. If your pages only use US terms, a model answering a British question has less to match you against, and a UK competitor whose pages use the buyer's own words becomes the easier source to cite.

The UK is also a regulatory leader on how AI search treats publishers. On 3 June 2026 the Competition and Markets Authority ordered Google to let publishers keep their content out of its AI answers without losing search rankings, which we covered in UK publishers can now opt out of AI Overviews. That debate shapes which sources stay visible to the engines, so it is worth following if your corroboration depends on UK media.

Which engines matter in the UK

Google's AI surfaces reach the widest UK audience simply because they sit on top of ordinary search: an AI Overview on roughly three in ten searches, by Ofcom's count, plus AI Mode for longer questions. ChatGPT is the standalone assistant whose UK traffic Ofcom tracked, and its growth from 368 million to 1.8 billion visits in a year makes it impossible to ignore. Microsoft Copilot reaches buyers through Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365, which matters most for B2B. Gemini and Perplexity round out the set.

We do not have a reliable, dated source for each engine's share of UK users, so we will not guess one. The practical answer is the same anyway: being named on Google's AI surfaces and in ChatGPT is the floor, and the right priority among the rest depends on where your own buyers ask. Measure it rather than assume it.

A practical AEO playbook for the UK

What this looks like in practice

Picture an American payroll platform that has started selling in the UK. Its US site is excellent and it is named often when American buyers ask. A finance manager in Leeds asks an assistant which payroll software handles RTI submissions to HMRC and auto-enrolment pensions. The platform is absent. The answer names three UK providers instead, because their pages say in plain terms that they file RTI, handle auto-enrolment and price per employee in pounds, and two UK accounting sites repeat it.

The fix is not a new product. It is a UK page that states those facts in British terms, with the sub-questions answered on the same page, and the same description earned on a couple of UK sources the engines already cite. Nothing about the software changed. What changed is that a British answer can now find it.

Common mistakes UK brands make

How to measure whether it is working

Write down ten to twenty questions a real UK buyer would ask in your category, in their words, with the local qualifiers they would use. Put each to every engine your buyers use, from the UK, and record whether you were named, how you were described and which sources the answer cited. The cited sources are the most useful column: they are the UK corroboration targets already feeding the answer.

Repeat the run on a schedule. AI answers vary from run to run, so a change only means something when it is bigger than that normal variation and it holds across runs. Track it per engine, because being named in ChatGPT and absent from AI Overviews is common and tells you exactly where to work next.

The takeaway

The UK has lived with AI answers longer than almost anywhere outside the US, and its buyers meet them on a large share of searches. The answer is in English, but it is built for a British buyer from British sources. Brands that state their UK facts in British terms, earn UK corroboration and measure the UK as its own market will be named. Brands that assume their US visibility carries over will keep wondering why it does not.

Frequently asked questions

What does AI visibility in the UK mean?

It means whether AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode name your brand when a buyer in the UK asks about your category. The answer is in English but is assembled for a British buyer from sources that fit one, so it often differs from the US answer to the same question.

Are Google AI Overviews common in the UK?

Yes. Google brought AI Overviews to the UK in August 2024 and AI Mode in July 2025. Ofcom's Online Nation report, published on 10 December 2025, found that about 30 percent of searches show an AI Overview and that 53 percent of adults say they often see these summaries.

Does my US visibility carry over to the UK?

Not reliably. The engines know the question comes from the UK and lean on sources that fit a British buyer: prices in pounds, VAT, UK delivery and UK regulation, in British vocabulary. Measure the UK as its own market rather than inferring it from US results.

Which engines matter most for UK brands?

Google's AI surfaces reach the widest UK audience because they sit on top of ordinary search, and ChatGPT's UK traffic grew from 368 million to 1.8 billion visits between the first eight months of 2024 and 2025, by Ofcom's count. Copilot matters for B2B through Microsoft's products. Beyond that, measure where your own buyers ask rather than assume.
