AI search visibility for brands in France: a 2026 AEO guide

AI visibility in France means whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode name your brand when a buyer in France asks about your category, in French. Google's AI answers only arrived in France in July 2026, so the French answer is still being formed. And our own study found that the French answer and the English answer to the same question name largely different brands. Here is what that means for your plan.

France is one of the largest markets in Europe and, until very recently, one of the few major ones without Google's AI answers. That changed in the summer of 2026. For brands, it means the French AI answer is new, still settling and, for now, less contested than in markets where the work started years ago.

Why France is a distinctive AEO market

Google turned on AI Overviews and AI Mode in France on 22 July 2026. The French answer is built from French sources.

The timing is the first difference. Google began rolling out AI Overviews and AI Mode in France on 22 July 2026, under the French names "Aperçus IA" and "Mode IA", reaching all French users over the following days (Blog du Modérateur, 22 Jul 2026). Germany, by comparison, has had AI Overviews since March 2025 (see our Germany guide). French buyers are only now meeting AI answers on top of ordinary search, which means the sources those answers lean on are being established now.

The second difference is language, and here we have our own data. In October 2026 we asked the same ten buyer questions in French and in English, from France, on four AI engines, and compared the brands each answer named. The result is in our native-language study, and France was one of the starkest cases.

"Asked in French instead of English, Perplexity kept almost none of its brands: 4 percent in common, against 64 percent when the same question was simply asked twice."

The language situation: the French answer names different brands

French is the language of the market, and the engines answer French questions from French sources. In our study, the median share of brands in common between the French answer and the English answer to the same question was:

The French answers also cited French websites far more often. The median share of cited pages on .fr domains was 40 percent in French against 0 percent in English on Perplexity, 60 against 33 percent on Copilot, 30 against 0 percent on Gemini and 18 against 0 percent on Google AI Mode, where the shift showed on 6 of 10 questions. The likely mechanism, which the data suggests but cannot prove, is that an engine answering in French searches in French, finds French pages and recommends what they recommend.

The study has real limits: one category (coffee), ten questions, two runs, one day, and about 650 answers across four markets. Coffee has strong local brands, and a category dominated by global players may show a smaller gap. Treat the percentages as rough. But the direction was consistent on every engine we checked in France: a brand tracked only in English is watching a different shortlist from the one French buyers see.

Which engines matter in France

Google's Aperçus IA and Mode IA will reach the widest French audience simply because they now sit on top of ordinary search. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity are all used in France and each built a different French shortlist in our study. We have not found a reliable, dated breakdown of each engine's share of French users, so we will not state one. Because the engines disagreed with each other as well as with English, the practical rule is to track each engine separately, in French.

A practical AEO playbook for France

What this looks like in practice

Picture a German maker of kitchen appliances selling in France. Its English and German pages are strong, and an English-language check from France shows it named often. Its French marketing team asks the same questions in French and finds three French brands and a large French retailer instead, cited from French review sites and French comparison pages. The brand's French site is a translated catalog with no French reviews or coverage behind it.

The fix is French pages that answer French questions, warranty in France, after-sales service, where to buy, and the same facts earned on a few French sources the answers already cite. The appliances did not change. The French answer now had French sources describing them.

Common mistakes brands make in France

How to measure whether it is working

Write ten to twenty questions a real French buyer would ask, in natural French. Put each to every engine your buyers use, from France, twice, and record which brands are named and which sites are cited. If you want to see the language effect for yourself, ask the English version too: if the lists differ more between languages than between the two runs, your English tracking is measuring a different market.

Then re-run on a schedule. With Google's AI answers so new in France, expect movement, and treat a change as real only when it is bigger than run-to-run variation and holds.

The takeaway

France got Google's AI answers late, in July 2026, and its AI answers run in French and lean on French sources. Our study found the French and English shortlists largely different on every engine we checked. Brands that publish native French facts, earn French corroboration and measure in French now will be part of the French answer while it is still being formed.

Frequently asked questions

What does AI visibility in France mean?

It means whether AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode name your brand when a buyer in France asks about your category, in French. The French answer is built mainly from French sources and often names different brands from the English answer.

When did Google AI Overviews launch in France?

Google began rolling out AI Overviews and AI Mode in France on 22 July 2026, under the names Aperçus IA and Mode IA, reaching all French users over the following days. That is well after markets such as Germany, which has had AI Overviews since March 2025.

Do French and English AI answers name the same brands?

In our October 2026 study, mostly not. Across ten coffee buying questions asked from France, the French and English answers shared a median of 4 percent of their brands on Perplexity, 11 percent on Google AI Mode, 8 percent on Gemini and 9 percent on Copilot, far less than two runs of the same question in one language. It is one category and a first study, so treat the figures as rough.

What should a brand selling in France do first?

Publish your core facts in native French, earn coverage on French sources, get the trust basics such as mentions légales right, and measure your visibility in French, per engine, from France. Do not infer it from English results.
