Google AI Mode can now finish the task without your website
For a while the story was that AI answers reduce your clicks. Google's newest move goes a step further: on 16 July 2026 it gave AI Mode the ability to complete tasks inside Google itself - order groceries, make a design, build a playlist - without sending you anywhere. When the answer becomes the action, the ground shifts again.
Every previous shift in AI search removed a step of the journey - the ten links became a summary, the summary became an answer. This one removes the destination. If the task finishes inside Google, there is no site to land on at all.
What Google shipped
On 16 July 2026, Google added connected-app integrations to AI Mode, starting with Instacart, Canva and YouTube Music. The point is not that AI Mode can talk about these services - it can now act through them. Ask it to plan meals and it can add ingredients to an Instacart cart. Ask for a social graphic and it can generate a Canva template. Ask for a playlist and it can build one in YouTube Music. It rolled out in the US first.
The verbs are what matter. "Add," "generate," "build" - these are actions, not answers. AI Mode is moving from a thing that tells you, to a thing that does it for you, inside the search box.
"When the answer becomes the action, there is no site to land on at all."
The zero-landing-page era
We already had zero-click, where the answer satisfies the query on the results page. This is the next stage: zero-landing-page, where the task the query implied is completed without visiting any website. The user wanted groceries ordered, a graphic made, a playlist built - and got the outcome, not a set of links to go get it themselves.
For businesses, that reframes the goal one more time. It was never just about ranking, then it was about being cited, and now, for connected tasks, it is about being the option the assistant reaches for when it acts. The competition moves from "get the click" to "be the tool the answer uses."
What this means for you
- Watch your category. Connected apps started with three services. See whether your category gets similar treatment, because that is where the journey stops reaching your site.
- Make your product usable, not just readable. When an assistant acts, it needs clean, structured, accurate data about your offer - the same discipline that helps it cite you helps it use you.
- Be the named default. If the assistant completes a task in your category, you want to be the option it defaults to. That comes from being the clearest, best-corroborated choice, which is the AEO work you were already doing.
- Measure named-ness, not just clicks. Clicks understate your presence more than ever as tasks complete in-place. Track whether you are named and used, not just visited.
The takeaway
Google connecting three apps to AI Mode looks small. The direction it points is not. The answer is becoming the action, and the website is becoming optional for a growing set of tasks. The brands that stay visible will be the ones the assistant can not only describe but reach for when it does the work - which makes being the clear, trusted, well-structured option in your category more valuable than ever.

What are Google AI Mode connected apps?
On 16 July 2026 Google added integrations that let AI Mode interact with connected apps directly - starting with Instacart, Canva and YouTube Music. Instead of just answering, AI Mode can add items to an Instacart cart, generate a Canva design, or build a YouTube Music playlist, completing the task inside Google. It began rolling out in the US first.
Why does this matter for SEO and AEO?
Because it moves task completion off your website and into Google. Earlier, an AI answer could still send a click; now, for supported tasks, the whole action can happen inside the search experience. It is a step past the traffic-drop story - the outcome the user wanted is delivered without a visit, which raises the value of being the brand named and connected in that flow.
What should brands do about it?
For now, watch which categories get connected-app treatment and whether yours is exposed. Keep your product data clear and structured so that when AI Mode assembles or acts on an answer in your category, you are the option it can describe and use. And measure whether you are still named as more of the journey completes inside Google.
