Prompt tracking

Prompt tracking is the practice of running a fixed set of questions through AI engines on a regular schedule and recording how each answer mentions, ranks and cites your brand and its competitors.

How it works

You choose the questions your buyers ask an AI engine, keep their wording fixed, and run them on each engine on a schedule. Each run records the answer text, the brands it names and the sources it cites. Prompt tracking is the AI-search counterpart of keyword rank tracking, with two differences: an answer has no single rank position, and answers vary between runs, so the useful readings are rates over several days rather than one result.

Example

As an illustration, a project management software brand tracks 20 prompts, such as "best project management tool for agencies", on four engines every day. After a week that is 560 answers. The brand is named in 196 of them, a mention rate of 35%, but in only 1 of the 7 answers one engine gave to the agencies prompt, which makes that prompt the first one to investigate.

Choosing prompts

Start from real buyer questions and mix the intents: category questions, comparisons, alternatives to a named competitor, and problem-led questions that do not name a product at all. Keep the set stable so this month's figures compare with last month's. For each market, write the prompts as a local buyer would phrase them in the local language, rather than translating your English set.

How Stellarcast handles it

In Stellarcast a tracked prompt is counted per market, so one prompt measured in two markets counts as two. Each tracked prompt runs daily on every engine in your plan. For a non-English market, prompts are drafted as a local buyer would phrase them, for you to edit, accept or discard, rather than translated from English.
