Unlinked brand mentions

Unlinked brand mentions are references to your brand name on other websites that do not include a hyperlink to your site.

Example

A trade publication lists your product by name in a roundup of tools but links only to its own review pages. A forum thread recommends your brand in a reply with no link at all. Both are unlinked mentions.

Why it matters

In traditional SEO, the value of a third-party page is often judged by whether it links to you. AI models work from the text itself, whether they learned it during training or retrieved it while answering, so a brand named in context can be picked up with or without a link. Unlinked mentions may therefore shape how often, and how, an AI engine names your brand.

The context of a mention matters as much as the count. A mention that describes what you do, who you serve and how you compare gives a model more to work with than a bare name in a list.

How to find them

Search for your brand name while excluding your own domain, watch review sites, forums and industry publications in your category, and compare the volume and tone of mentions with your competitors'.
