Generative engine optimization (GEO)
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how a brand appears in responses produced by generative AI systems, such as AI chat assistants and AI features in search.
Example
A retailer checks how two AI assistants describe its return policy, finds that one repeats an outdated detail, and updates its help pages and marketplace listings so the policy is stated clearly and consistently.
How it relates to AEO
GEO and AEO are often used interchangeably. Some people use GEO for generative systems in general and AEO for the answer-focused experiences within them, but there is no settled boundary. In practice both cover the same core work: clear, accurate, well-structured content, a consistent brand story across third-party sources, and pages that AI systems can reach.
Why it matters
When an AI system answers a question directly, the brands it names may get attention that would otherwise go to a list of links. GEO is about influencing which brands those are and how they are described.
How Stellarcast handles it
Stellarcast measures the outcome GEO aims at: whether and how each AI engine it tracks names and cites your brand, per market, with a P25-P75 range.
