AI search visibility for brands in Brazil: a 2026 AEO guide
AI visibility in Brazil means whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode name your brand when a buyer in Brazil asks about your category, in Portuguese. About 50 million Brazilians already use generative AI, and our own study found that the Portuguese answer and the English answer to the same question name largely different brands. If you are not described in Portuguese, Brazilian AI answers mostly do not know you. Here is how to change that.
Brazil is Latin America's largest market, and for AI search it is a clean case: buyers ask in Portuguese, and the answer is built from Portuguese-language, mostly Brazilian, sources. There is no large English-speaking buyer base to fall back on. A brand that is strong in English and absent in Portuguese is, to the Brazilian AI answer, close to invisible.
Why Brazil is a distinctive AEO market
Google has served AI Overviews in Brazil since August 2024, when Brazil was one of the first six countries to get them after the US, with local-language support (GSMArena, 16 Aug 2024). So Brazilian buyers have been reading AI answers on top of search for more than two years.
Adoption of standalone AI is broad and growing. Cetic.br's TIC Domicílios 2025 survey, published on 9 December 2025, found that 32 percent of Brazilian internet users aged 10 and over use generative AI, about 50 million people (Cetic.br, 9 Dec 2025). That is a very large audience already researching inside AI tools, and the same survey found use concentrated among higher-income, more educated users, which in many categories is exactly the buyer a brand wants.
Brazil is also writing its rules for AI. We covered the state of play in Brazil is building its AI rulebook. The direction, toward accountability and data protection under the LGPD, rewards brands that are clear, verifiable sources.
"In Brazil, the Portuguese answer is the answer. A brand that exists only in English is close to invisible to it."

The language situation: Portuguese changes the shortlist
Brazilian Portuguese is the language of the market, and it is not the Portuguese of Portugal. Vocabulary, spelling conventions and the sites buyers trust differ, so a page written for Lisbon reads as foreign in São Paulo. And as our own data shows, language decides a great deal about which brands an AI engine names.
In our native-language study we asked the same ten coffee buying questions in Portuguese and in English, from Brazil, and compared the brands each answer named. The median share of brands in common between the Portuguese and English answers was 6 percent on Perplexity, against 55 percent when the same question was asked twice in one language (8 of 10 questions showed the bigger language gap), and 18 percent on Microsoft Copilot, against 48 percent (10 of 10).
The Portuguese answers also cited Brazilian websites far more. The median share of cited pages on .br domains was 50 percent in Portuguese against 0 percent in English on Perplexity (10 of 10 questions), and 50 against 14 percent on Copilot (8 of 9). Google AI Mode and Gemini were not included for Brazil in that study, and it covers one category, ten questions and one day of collection, so treat the figures as rough. But the direction is clear: the Portuguese answer is drawn from Brazilian sources, and it names a different shortlist.
Which engines matter in Brazil
Google's AI Overviews reach the widest audience because they sit on top of ordinary search, and Brazilians have had them since 2024. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity are all used by Brazil's 50 million generative AI users. We have not found a reliable, dated breakdown of each engine's share of Brazilian users, so we will not state one. In our study the two engines we could test in Brazil both shifted strongly with language, so track each engine you care about separately, in Portuguese.
A practical AEO playbook for Brazil
- Publish your core facts in native Brazilian Portuguese. What you do, for whom, prices in reais, payment options Brazilian buyers expect such as Pix and installments, delivery, invoicing with nota fiscal, and support. Written for Brazilian phrasing, not translated from English or adapted from Portugal.
- Earn Brazilian corroboration. Brazilian trade and business media, review and complaint platforms such as Reclame Aqui, marketplaces where your category sells, comparison sites and forums. Our data shows Portuguese answers lean heavily on .br sources.
- Be clear about data and compliance. State how you handle personal data under the LGPD, where you are registered and how buyers reach you. Clear, checkable facts make you an easier source to name.
- Cover the sub-questions in Portuguese. Delivery times by region, returns, warranty, payment terms and integrations, each with a plain answer.
- Measure in Portuguese, per engine, from Brazil. In our study an English check from Brazil saw a mostly different shortlist.
What this looks like in practice
Picture a European project-management software company expanding into Brazil. In English it is named often for "best project management tool for agencies". Asked in Portuguese from Brazil, assistants name two Brazilian tools and a global rival with an active Brazilian community. The European company has a Portuguese landing page translated from English, prices in euros and no Brazilian reviews or coverage.
The fix is native Brazilian Portuguese pages with prices in reais, payment and invoicing terms Brazilian agencies expect, and Portuguese answers to the questions a buyer asks, plus the same facts earned on a few Brazilian review sites and media the answers already cite. The software did not change. The Portuguese answer finally had Brazilian sources to work from.
Common mistakes brands make in Brazil
- Measuring in English. In our study the Portuguese and English shortlists in Brazil had little in common.
- Using European Portuguese. It reads as foreign to Brazilian buyers and matches their phrasing poorly.
- Ignoring Brazilian review and complaint platforms. They are where Brazilian buyers check a brand, and they are sources the engines can read.
- Pricing in foreign currency. An answer built for a Brazilian buyer favors sources that speak in reais and local payment terms.
How to measure whether it is working
Write ten to twenty questions a real Brazilian buyer would ask, in natural Brazilian Portuguese. Put each to every engine your buyers use, from Brazil, twice, and record which brands are named and which sites are cited. Add the English versions once to see the language gap for yourself. Then re-run on a schedule, and treat a change as real only when it is bigger than run-to-run variation and holds.
The takeaway
Brazil has had Google's AI answers since 2024, has around 50 million generative AI users, and asks in Portuguese. Our study found that the Portuguese answer names a largely different shortlist from the English one and leans on Brazilian sites. Brands that publish native Brazilian Portuguese facts, earn Brazilian corroboration and measure in Portuguese will be named. Brands that rely on an English site will mostly not be.
