Agentic commerce
Agentic commerce is shopping in which an AI agent acts for a person, researching products, comparing options and, in some cases, completing a purchase on their behalf.
Example
Someone asks an AI assistant to find a waterproof hiking jacket under a set budget, compare the return policies of the shops that stock it, and place the order once they confirm the choice.
Why it matters
When an agent does the research, the brands it considers depend on what it can find and understand. Clear product information, accurate pricing and availability, consistent descriptions across retailers, and reviews and mentions on sources the agent reads can all play a part. A brand that a person would recognize on a shelf still has to be legible to software.
The tools and standards for agent purchasing are still developing, and they differ between AI platforms. For many brands, the practical starting point is the same as for AI search in general: be named, be described accurately, and be easy to verify.
